We had the pleasure of staying in the cutest little town in southern Oregon. We found this spot using our Harvest Host membership. My first impressions of this town was how friendly everyone was. As I drove the country roads every person I passed waved and smiled. Coming from a fast-paced town this was such a surprise. The property we stayed on was part of a large potato farm. Our host greeted us with a wide selection of potato chips made using the potatoes from their farm. Brands like Lays and Ruffles which obviously we had heard of so that was pretty neat.
Another 37 degree day had us all a bit grumpy and in desperate search of water to swim in. Thankfully, Malin has an outdoor pool which was open late. After a quick search we learned there was some kind of event happening but ending soon and then the pool would be open to the public. We decided to go to one of the 3 restaurants in town to grab some dinner before swimming. Since we were only an 8 minute bike ride to town we opted to ride instead of drive. After unloading our bikes, we got our swim gear and began our ride. We got into town and learned one of the restaurants was closed, so we had two options: pizza or Mexican. Anyone who knows Lukas will know Mexican was clearly the only option.
After dinner of a shared burrito and a quesadilla, we continued on to the pool. Being such a small town you would think that it would be easy to find… and it probably was, we just rode past it a few times. Finally, we found it! After a quick change and shower, we were ready to jump in. Both boys are fishes, there really is no other way to describe it. Since we’ve spent as much time as possible in pools or lakes this summer they are becoming very good swimmers. Niko especially has taken to the task with great enthusiasm and really doesn’t want help. Which is great.. except that he’s two and he scares other people when he jumps into the pool with no fear. Once he pops back up, every one cheers but in those two seconds you can hear the gasps from the crowd.
The boys spent the whole hour jumping off the diving board. Which meant Lukas and I spent the whole hour treading water in the deep end. Once closing time hit we changed and headed back towards the trailer. As we rode we passed a farm that had a large dog who did not appreciate us riding past his property. I won’t lie, I peddled a little faster and hoped that fence did its job. Thankfully, it did and we made it back to the trailer safely. Significantly cooler now, we got the kids ready for bed and then settled down for the night ourselves.
The Next Morning
The next morning we ate a quick breakfast and then decided to head back into town to let the kids play at the playground. The boys do much better in the car when they’ve had a chance to run out some energy before being stuck in their carseats for too long. We have also figured out that, when possible, it’s best to stick around first thing in the morning when it’s cool and then drive during the heat of the day. We hopped back onto the bikes and made our way back into town. Being a Saturday we assumed there would be others at the playground but it was EMPTY! There were maybe half a dozen other people in the park while we were there. This did not bother the kids at all as they had the whole place to themselves. Big contrast from the busy pool the night before.
Once the kids were ready for naps and the sun was beating down on us, we set off. Back to the trailer, bikes loaded up on the back and ready to hit the road. We had so much fun here that we forgot to take any pictures!
